8.5.8.3. GPS Overlay Approaches. GPS overlay approaches are those where the pilot<br />

is allowed to use GPS equipment to fly existing VOR, VOR/DME, NDB, NDB/DME,<br />

TACAN, and RNAV precision approach procedures. There are two different types of<br />

overlay approaches; those where “or GPS” is included in the title and those where “or<br />

GPS” is NOT included in the title. Approaches must be flown in accordance with the<br />

Aircraft Flight Manual and the procedure depicted on the appropriate instrument<br />

approach chart.<br />

8.5.8.3.1. Overlay approaches where "GPS" is NOT included in the title of the<br />

procedure but are retrievable from the aircraft database. (Example: your GPS<br />

avionics equipment allows you to retrieve and arm an approach titled “VOR<br />

RWY 35”) USAF aircraft are NOT authorized to use RNAV/GPS equipment in<br />

IMC to fly overlay approaches without “or GPS" included in the title.<br />

However, USAF crews may enhance situation awareness by loading the
