9.11.7. How to Fly a VCOA. When you are “cleared as filed”, fly the VCOA as<br />

published unless there are other procedures (i.e., SID and/or ODP) for that runway. If<br />

there are other procedures for that runway, query the controller to clarify which<br />

procedure is expected.<br />

9.11.8.1. Gustavus AK is an example of a VCOA at an airport that also has an ODP.<br />

A brief review of the ODP shows the required climb gradients are 220 or 270 ft/nm<br />

and require RNAV equipment that meets the specified standards. The VCOA<br />

provides a viable alternative for aircraft that cannot meet the climb gradient and/or<br />

are not suitably equipped to fly the Sisters One Departure.
