approach so that it is displayed on the aircraft moving map display. Primary
course guidance must be provided by the underlying traditional navigational
aid in IMC (TAC, VOR, NDB, etc.).
Figure 8.21. GPS Overlay Approach Where GPS is NOT in Title of Approach (Not
Authorized in IMC for USAF Aircraft).
8.5.8.3.2. Overlay approaches where "or GPS" IS included in the title of the
procedure and are retrievable from the database (e.g., "VOR or GPS RWY 35").
(Note: Non-U.S. overlay approaches may include "(GPS)" in the approach title.)
Properly certified USAF aircraft may fly these overlay approaches in IMC in
the U.S. NAS. These overlay approaches may not be flown outside the U.S. due
to potential discrepancies in database information. Underlying ground-based
NAVAIDS must be operational and associated aircraft avionics must be
installed, operational, turned on and monitored. In the case of a discrepancy
between GPS and traditional data, pilots must revert to using the traditional
NAVAID.
