Chapter V – The <strong>California</strong> Passenger <strong>Rail</strong> NetworkOTHER PASSENGER RAIL SERVICESOther railroads in <strong>California</strong> offer limited rail passenger service, which isgenerally <strong>to</strong>urist oriented. These non-Amtrak intercity rail passenger servicesremain subject <strong>to</strong> the regula<strong>to</strong>ry jurisdiction of the CPUC, FRA, and the SurfaceTransportation Board (STB).The Sierra <strong>Rail</strong>road (formally the <strong>California</strong> Western <strong>Rail</strong>road) betweenFort Bragg and Willits in Mendocino County has been the principal privatelyownedrailroad in <strong>California</strong> offering regularly scheduled rail passenger service.Sierra <strong>Rail</strong>road acquired the line and opened it in May 2004 for passengerexcursion service. Excursion related passenger traffic on the 40-mile route is theprimary business. The Sierra <strong>Rail</strong>road has begun an ongoing acquisition andrehabilitation program for stations, track and rolling s<strong>to</strong>ck.
