2007-08 – 2017-18 California State Rail PlanThe network would include hardware installations on the State-owned rollingstock and would likely include equipment installations along the right-of-way andother fixed facilities. This network could use similar technology to an ETMSsystem, however would be completely separate, as ETMS must be a totally closedsystemin order to maintain the high level of accuracy, and lack of failurenecessary for a signal safety system. The benefits of a comprehensive wirelessnetwork are discussed in more detail in Chapter III. The CCJPA is developing aRequest for Proposal (RFP) to be ready by 2008 to establish and maintain awireless network. Based on the results of the RFP process, the Department willproceed with implementing a network on the San Joaquins.MULTIMODAL CONNECTIVYThe Department strives to make the San Joaquin Route as “seamless” as possiblewith enhanced connectivity to other transportation systems.The Department is working to improve schedule coordination with theCapitol Corridor and Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) for direct railconnections and connecting to Amtrak Thruway buses. In 2003-04,the Department initiated a program on the San Joaquins where conductors offerfree transfers to participating local transit services. Within the ten-year period,the Department plans to expand this program to all major transit providers onthe Route. Expansion of marketing and passenger information programs willprovide additional information on multimodal connectivity with local transit.Connecting Amtrak BusesThe extensive network of Amtrak dedicated feeder buses connecting with theSan Joaquins is essential to the route, as at least 70 percent of all San Joaquinriders (in 2005-06) used one or more buses for a portion of their trip. Ridershipanalysis shows that feeder bus riders make longer than average trips, and thereforeproduce higher revenues per trip.The Department contracts with Amtrak for the provision of dedicated feeder busservices, and Amtrak then contracts with bus operators. The bus routes functionas direct parts of the Amtrak system, with coordinated connections, guaranteedseating, integrated fares and ticketing procedures, and inclusion in Amtrak’scentral information and reservation system in the same manner as the trains.Following is a listing of the San Joaquin bus routes and their major destinations,as well as the Capitol Corridor bus routes that also connect to the San Joaquins.Cities that are San Joaquin train connection points are in italics. Cities designatedwith asterisks (*) are not served by all schedules on the route.110
