Chapter I - <strong>California</strong>’s Vision for Intercity Passenger <strong>Rail</strong>Bakersfield – The Bakersfield station opened in July 2000. The station is locatedin the heart of the civic center entertainment complex, which includes theBakersfield Convention Center and Centennial Garden Arena. New developmentsnear the station include additional entertainment and recreation facilities, retail andoffice space, and multi-family housing. Bakersfield is served by an extensivenetwork of Amtrak thruway buses in addition <strong>to</strong> Golden Empire Transit and KernRegional Transit bus service.Emeryville – A large, three building 550,000 square foot mixed use project isbeing developed near the Emeryville station. The project contains office andcommercial space as well as owner occupied lofts and <strong>to</strong>wn houses and seniorhousing. The station is served by the Capi<strong>to</strong>l Corridor, San Joaquins,Coast Starlight and <strong>California</strong> Zephyr long-distance Amtrak trains, AC Transitbuses, and a free shuttle bus that connects <strong>to</strong> the MacArthur BART station andvarious businesses, work sites, and retail and entertainment centers.Fuller<strong>to</strong>n – Two major high-density transit-oriented development projectsadjacent <strong>to</strong> the station were completed in 2004. There are approximately400 residential units in these two developments, and both include office and retailspace at street level. Residents are eligible <strong>to</strong> receive free commuter passesthrough a Metrolink program. A conceptual master plan has been prepared for theUP Recreation Trail and Neighborhood Park, a one-acre park with a recreationtrail from the station <strong>to</strong> Independence Park. Fuller<strong>to</strong>n station is served by thePacific Surfliners, the Amtrak long distance Southwest Chief, and Metrolinkcommuter rail.Oakland (Jack London Square) – A large, high-density housing complex wasconstructed across the railroad <strong>to</strong> the west of the station. To the north of thisproject, the Jack London Square area has undergone a great deal of transformationin recent years changing from a predominantly industrial port area <strong>to</strong> a busy retailand entertainment district. Also, major new housing and business projects arebeing constructed near the station <strong>to</strong> the east of the railroad. In order <strong>to</strong>accommodate increased ridership at the station, the Department and theCCJPA are planning <strong>to</strong> widen the platform at the station. The station is served bythe San Joaquin, Capi<strong>to</strong>l Corridor, Coast Starlight trains, Amtrak thruway buses,and AC Transit. The station is within several blocks of the Oakland-AlamedaFerry Terminal and the Lake Merritt BART station.15
