<strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> – <strong>2017</strong>-<strong>18</strong> <strong>California</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> <strong>Plan</strong>MULTIMODAL CONNECTIVITYThe Department strives <strong>to</strong> make the intercity passenger rail system as “seamless”as possible with excellent connectivity <strong>to</strong> other transportation systems. Designingfor connectivity enters in<strong>to</strong> virtually every aspect of operations, marketing andcapital planning. The Department will continue <strong>to</strong> improve connectivity whereverpossible by expanding the programs discussed below, and implementing newprograms.Amtrak: The <strong>State</strong>-supported routes connect with each other and with Amtrak’snational intercity passenger rail network. Many passengers use the <strong>State</strong>supportedroutes as part of a longer rail trip. Coordination of schedules with otherservices generates additional ridership and can improve overall efficiency.The Pacific Surfliners connect <strong>to</strong> the: San Joaquins and Capi<strong>to</strong>l Corridor (viaAmtrak bus), Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief, and Sunset Limited.The San Joaquins connect <strong>to</strong> the: Pacific Surfliner (via Amtrak bus),Capi<strong>to</strong>l Corridor, Coast Starlight, <strong>California</strong> Zephyr, Sunset Limited, andSouthwest Chief. The Capi<strong>to</strong>l Corridor connects <strong>to</strong>: the San Joaquins,Pacific Surfliners (via Amtrak bus), Coast Starlight and <strong>California</strong> Zephyr.Commuter and Urban <strong>Rail</strong>: In Southern <strong>California</strong>, the Department works withboth Metrolink and Coaster <strong>to</strong> promote the <strong>Rail</strong> 2 <strong>Rail</strong> Program, which connectsthe Pacific Surfliners <strong>to</strong> Metrolink in the Los Angeles area, and Coaster in theSan Diego area. Additionally, the Pacific Surfliners s<strong>to</strong>p at stations withconnections <strong>to</strong> Los Angeles Metro <strong>Rail</strong>, San Diego Trolley, and Caltrain inSan Jose (via Amtrak bus service). In central <strong>California</strong>, the San Joaquins s<strong>to</strong>p atstations with connections <strong>to</strong> Caltrain, BART, San Francisco Muni, Santa ClaraValley Transit Authority (VTA), and Sacramen<strong>to</strong> Regional Transit. In addition,the network of commuter rail and transit systems in Southern <strong>California</strong> isaccessible <strong>to</strong> San Joaquin Route passengers by utilizing the dedicated connectingbus service at Bakersfield. In Northern <strong>California</strong>, the Capi<strong>to</strong>l Corridor s<strong>to</strong>ps atstations with connections <strong>to</strong> Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express (ACE), BART,VTA and Sacramen<strong>to</strong> Regional Transit (fall 2006).Transit: Under the Free Transit Transfer Program, the Department and the CCJPAhave agreements with many local transit agencies, serving communities along allthree <strong>State</strong> routes, <strong>to</strong> offer Amtrak passengers free transfer passes as follows:Pacific Surfliner Route:• City of Guadalupe Transit• Regional Transit Authority (San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Atascadero,Paso Robles)• San Luis Obispo Regional Transit (SLO Transit)• Santa Barbara Metro Transit District60
