They will need to be resolved before ATVtourism can be considered an important market for Newfoundland and Labrador.Resorts and Character AccommodationsIn Section 9 we present a rationale and proposals to support resort development along with othertypes of ‘character’ accommodations that can influence travel.Other Demand Influencers of Interest for the FutureCoastal cruising has latent potential. A home porting cruise ship should be pursued. Adventurecruising offers the potential in the long term of becoming a world class product for the province. How about a vehicle/passenger ferry along the south coast, at least between Burin peninsula,Harbour Breton, perhaps Burgeo and even Rose Blanche, to provide a circle auto tour? Oralternatively, a tour operator could develop a package tour with the current passenger-onlyferries by using a vehicle transporter to move their cars from one end to the other. (At least oneof the province’s tour operators has offered such a package, primarily on a one-off basis). There is a similar opportunity to build on the opportunity for a circle tour connectingNewfoundland and Labrador via the ferry service between Cartwright and Happy Valley-GooseBay.Pursuing Key OpportunitiesIt is proposed that, for key projects in particular, the tourism development agencies in theprovince, including DTCR, DITRD and ACOA become more proactive in pursuing projects. Asdiscussed further in Section 13, this would require the agencies to scope out different projectsand then invite proposals from pre-qualified potential proponents. Where warranted, acustomized ‘package’ of incentives and financial support should be offered.Key Projects for the Near FutureThis strategic planning process has identified several such projects that, because of their abilityto significantly strengthen their respective destination areas in tourism, deserve furtherinvestigation as to feasibility, possible proponents, funding, etc., along with proactive efforts toTHE ECONOMIC PLANNING GROUP of Canada Newfoundland & Labrador Tourism Product DevelopmentD.
