- 270 -Suggested Tourism <strong>Development</strong> Ideas Worthy of Further Consideration° Complete development of the Long Point Lighthouse property – iceberg interpretation,restaurant° Varied food service – e.g. tea room or café° In the context of the tourism strategy mentioned above, the development of theTwillingate Experience Centre to provide a range of visitor services <strong>and</strong> act as a point ofarrival <strong>and</strong> orientation to the area, <strong>and</strong> a location for booking local activities.° The plan also proposes development of the harbourfront on the south side of theTwillingate Harbour in a cluster of attractions, activities <strong>and</strong> experiences.° Develop a series of guided <strong>and</strong> self-guided tours with interpretation materials in theTwillingate Isl<strong>and</strong>s area; as part of initiative there may be some improvements needed tothe hiking trail system.Wesleyville/Newtown (New Wes Valley)This area is still in the early stages of development as a tourist destination area. However, theestablishment <strong>and</strong> ongoing development of the Barbour Living Heritage Village is providing afocus for tourism activity in the area. There is currently a very limited supply ofaccommodations <strong>and</strong> other things to see <strong>and</strong> do, hence this area being identified as a Tier 3destination area.Suggested Tourism <strong>Development</strong> Ideas Worthy of Further Consideration° Continue efforts to develop <strong>and</strong> enhance the Barbour Living Heritage Village withexp<strong>and</strong>ed programming; enhanced dinner theatre, <strong>and</strong> other efforts to strengthen itssustainabilityChange <strong>and</strong> Fogo Isl<strong>and</strong>s – The Isl<strong>and</strong> ExperienceAdjacent to the Twillingate area, Fogo <strong>and</strong> Change Isl<strong>and</strong>s offer a unique <strong>Newfoundl<strong>and</strong></strong>outport experience. Limited visitor services <strong>and</strong> challenges with respect to access mean thattourism activity in the Isl<strong>and</strong>s is limited, but it has been increasing. There is an opportunity tobuild on the appeals <strong>and</strong> market recognition of the Twillingate area, in combination with Fogo<strong>and</strong> Change Isl<strong>and</strong>s to create a particularly unique tourist destination area in this central partof the province. Tilting was officially designated by the Heritage Foundation of<strong>Newfoundl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Labrador</strong> as the first provincial heritage district in 2003.A key requirement for the Isl<strong>and</strong>s, if they are to become more of a tourist destination, isimprovements to the ferry service.
