- 265 -Section 16Central RegionOverviewThe Central Region of the province covers a vast area from Terra Nova National Park in theeast to the western reaches of the Baie Verte Peninsula <strong>and</strong> south through Bay d’Espoir <strong>and</strong>west to beyond Ramea. Its tourism products <strong>and</strong> experiences are equally diverse, as are itsl<strong>and</strong>scapes <strong>and</strong> natural <strong>and</strong> cultural heritage. In the eastern part of the region, Terra NovaNational Park <strong>and</strong> its extensive camping facilities, Terra Nova Lodge <strong>and</strong> Golf Course <strong>and</strong> theEastport Peninsula with its beaches, are popular vacation destinations for the resident market.The Kittiwake Coast area offers three or four different experiences – the Road to the Shorewhich takes the visitor along a largely coastal route through small communities, offers theBarbour Living Heritage Village as an emerging attraction. The Twillingate Isl<strong>and</strong>s area isknown for its icebergs <strong>and</strong> whalewatching tours, <strong>and</strong> also has appealing cultural <strong>and</strong> heritageattributes. Fogo <strong>and</strong> Change Isl<strong>and</strong>s offer the visitor a truly unique cultural <strong>and</strong> outportexperience – although not yet an established tourism destination <strong>and</strong> with a shortage of visitorservices, the Isl<strong>and</strong>s Experience offers future potential. G<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Falls-Windsor arethe main service centres in the region, offering access to the rural <strong>and</strong> coastal areas includingthe Bay of Exploits <strong>and</strong> Leading Tickles.The southern portion of the Central Region is largely wilderness with spectacular coastalfjords, cliffs <strong>and</strong> outport communities along the south coast. Much of this area is accessibleonly by passenger ferry. In the interior regions, such as the Head of Bay d’Espoir <strong>and</strong> theConne River area, the Aboriginal community is developing a number of cultural tourismproducts such as the Conne River Pow Wow.The Central region of the province has been working at developing its winter tourism productcentred around snowmobiling.
