Other InitiativesOther significant initiatives that have occurred since completion of the Destination<strong>Labrador</strong> Plan include the following:o The <strong>Labrador</strong> West Gateway has been constructed in <strong>Labrador</strong> City.o Battle Harbour has been declared a National Historic District <strong>and</strong> its global profilewas raised significantly in 2002 through the World Legacy Awards sponsored byConservation International <strong>and</strong> National Geographic Traveler Magazine.o Porcupine Str<strong>and</strong> (the Viking Wonderst<strong>and</strong> from the Norse Sagas), a 40 km s<strong>and</strong>dune beach near Cartwright, is among the top two or three largest beaches on thecontinent. It is becoming recognized as a major heritage asset <strong>and</strong> its archaeologicalprogram has been making exciting discoveries under the direction of ArchaeologistLisa Rankin.o Operators from L’Anse au Clair to Cartwright have gotten together to market Route510 as <strong>Labrador</strong> Coastal Drive.o The historic community of North West River is proceeding to implement its HeritageMaster Plan with initiatives such as waterfront development, the <strong>Labrador</strong> HeritageMuseum <strong>and</strong> a <strong>Labrador</strong> Trapper sculpture being crafted by Luben Boykov.o Selected investments have been made in accommodations; for example, building theNorth Side Motel in Cartwright, expansion of the Alexis Hotel in Port Hope Simpson<strong>and</strong> The Royal Inn <strong>and</strong> Suites in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, with latter upgraded to3.5 stars.o A Transition Committee was formed to begin implementation of the Destination<strong>Labrador</strong> strategy but to date, no funding support has been secured The strategyneeds funding, either as outlined in the Destination <strong>Labrador</strong> Report, or in somealternative form that considers what has happened since the Plan was completed.Additional Observations about the Destination <strong>Labrador</strong> PlanThe Plan doesn’t outline a strategic approach to the three destination areas (ie, one thatrecognizes their different needs, stages of development, etc).THE ECONOMIC PLANNING GROUP of Canada <strong>Newfoundl<strong>and</strong></strong> & <strong>Labrador</strong> Tourism <strong>Product</strong> <strong>Development</strong>D.
