- 45 -CampgroundsSupplyAn inventory of campground facilities in theprovince was prepared using the 2003 Travel Guide<strong>and</strong> indicates 89 campgrounds in total, with justover 6,000 sites. Some 25% of the available sitesare provided by the federal <strong>and</strong> provincialgovernments - 800 sites in the two national parks<strong>and</strong> 990 or so sites in the 14 campgrounds stilloperated by the province. A number of other campgrounds are operated by municipalities <strong>and</strong>not-for-profit groups such as the local Lions Club.Approximately one third of the supply is in Western <strong>Newfoundl<strong>and</strong></strong>, with some 28% in thecentral region. The Kittiwake area of central <strong>Newfoundl<strong>and</strong></strong> has the largest supply ofcampgrounds <strong>and</strong> also thelargest campgrounds, withSupply of Campgrounds by Regionover 1,200 sites in total, 20%of the provincial supply. This 50%is in part a reflection of Terra 45%39% 38%Nova National Park which by 40%itself has almost 500 sites.Information on the mix of25% 20% 23% serviced <strong>and</strong> non-serviced20%sites at campgrounds is not15%11%available. As with accommodationoccupancy data, there is not 100% reporting of data from campgrounds. In fact, the reportingrate is much lower for campgrounds <strong>and</strong> there is considerable skepticism as to the reliabilityof this data. As such, it should be viewed with considerable caution.
