Podujevo 1999 – Beyond Reasonable Doubtthe scene of the crime. I met the defendant for the first time in 1994 andafter that in 1999 at my brother’s house because we took off from there bybuses. We were chatting later on because he was friends with Rajko. Afterthat we were seeing each other in Prolom Banja, as well, but we did nottalk about this event. I did not talk about this event with my brother either.I think that what happened is a great sin and I do not like to talk about it.We were soldiers, but we did not do things like this. We did not discuss inthe unit who might have done this.”Nataša Kandić, the representative of the injured party, asked the witnesssomething and he said the following:“I know that the Scorpions members mentioned me as one of the perpetrators, which is absurd because I was not there. I took a rifle with 150 bulletsand returned the same rifle with the same number of bullets. Police werecoming the same evening or the following day, I think, to Prolom Banjaand they could have determined who was shooting. Police officers talked tothe Commander Slobodan Medić and the man who was in charge of issuingweapons, Sran Manojlović. On the way from Podujevo to Prolom Banjanobody asked me anything regarding this event. I do not quite rememberwhen was the first time I heard my name mentioned as one of the perpetrators,I think it was in the newspapers or something, and I even heardthat from the investigative judge when they interrogated me, and they stillask me that question. People generally ask me what happened there. Theythink that I know everything because I am the commander’s brother, but Ido not know anything at all. That is all just a rumour. We all had the samepolice uniforms, green camouflage uniforms. I had long hair. I think thatnobody wore a helmet. I had a camouflage cap, the same colour as theuniform. I had a short beard, some seven days’ growth, and I did not havesideburns. Police have never interrogated me in relation to the allegationsthat I participated in the murder of the civilians. Commander SlobodanMedić opened an investigation into this event with intent to find out whokilled the civilians. He was asking the soldiers if they saw anything, but Ihave not found out anything. My brother, the commander, knew that I didnot do it and he also knew that none of our people there would do somethinglike that. He is a man of firm character and if some of our soldiers didsomething like that, there would be no need for this trial to resolve this issuebecause he was punishing for every little thing. I stayed in Prolom Ban-157
