CHD 202-Children’s Art** 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course surveys the creative development of young children. Children’s Art<br />
explores a variety of art media and techniques with an emphasis on process and<br />
communicating with children about their art.<br />
Prerequisite: CHD 100.<br />
CHD 203-Children’s Literature** 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course focuses on making literature come alive for young children. It emphasizes<br />
an exposure to, and evaluation of, quality children’s literature in a variety<br />
of genres. The course enables students to transpose a theoretical knowledge of<br />
children’s literature into lively, engaging activities.<br />
Prerequisite: CHD 100.<br />
CHD 204-Children’s Science & Math** 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course investigates mathematical and scientific concepts and skills in relation<br />
to children’s intellectual development. It involves materials and methods for<br />
incorporating these concepts into the early childhood curriculum.<br />
Prerequisite: CHD 100.<br />
CHD 205-Health, Safety & Nutrition* 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course emphasizes established health, safety and nutritional practices in<br />
children’s programs. It stresses the responsibilities of early childhood professionals<br />
in preventing disease and accident and for promoting positive health and nutrition<br />
habits in children.<br />
Prerequisite: CHD 100.<br />
CHD 207-Young Children In Society** 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course focuses on the diversity of influences of home and family, culture<br />
and society that shape the social and emotional development of children. It stresses<br />
an antibias approach.<br />
Prerequisite: CHD 100.<br />
CHD 208/PSY 204-Child Psychology* 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
The study of human development and behavior from conception to adolescence.<br />
Subjects considered are the interdependence of the emotional, intellectual, social<br />
and physical development of the child.<br />
Prerequisites: PSY 103 and CHD 100.<br />
CHD 210-Children with Disabilities* 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course defines and analyzes exceptional conditions in young children. It<br />
emphasizes the purposes and legislation for early intervention, the IEP/IFSP process<br />
and the interdisciplinary team approach, including the role of the family and<br />
community. The course includes assessment and instructional techniques as well<br />
as current trends and issues in early childhood special education.<br />
Prerequisite: CHD 100.<br />
CHD 220-Field Work in Child Development* 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This course integrates practical experience and theoretical knowledge in a year<br />
long sequence. Students work directly with young children for 10 hours a week in<br />
child care and Head Start Programs, kindergartens, primary grades, nursery schools<br />
and programs for children with disabilities. Seminars in which students have the<br />
opportunity to discuss successes, problems, strategies and curriculum components<br />
are an important component of the course.<br />
Prerequisites: CHD 100, CHD 199 and four additional CHD courses are required.<br />
Students must maintain a “C” grade in all Child Development<br />
courses in order to take CHD 220.<br />
