ENG 222-Literature of the Western World II 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

The reading, study, and discussion of masterpieces of literature from the Neoclassical,<br />

Romantic, Realistic, Naturalistic and Modern periods. Particular attention<br />

is paid, but not restricted, to major historical periods; important literary<br />

artists, the development of various genres, such as the short story and novel;<br />

and philosophical movements.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />

ENG 223-American Literature I 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Includes the work of major authors from the seventeenth through mid-nineteenth<br />

centuries; teaching in American literary history and supplementary reading<br />

in the American novel are also assigned; works that are read and discussed are<br />

considered for their inherent worth and for their significance to the evolving national<br />

culture.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />

ENG 224-American Literature II 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Begins with poetry of Whitman and concludes with works of writers who were<br />

active prior to World War II; collateral readings in plays and novels, the writing of<br />

extended papers and readings in literary history are also required.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />

ENG 225-British Literature I 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Includes reading and discussion of representative authors and works from the<br />

Old English period to the end of the 18th century; reading in literary history may<br />

be assigned; attention is paid to the development of various literary and historical<br />

characteristics in the different periods of British literature.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />

ENG 226-British Literature II 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Begins with a study of the Romantic Period and continues through a consideration<br />

of contemporary British writers; collateral readings in plays and novels may<br />

be required; attention is focused on the development of various literary and historical<br />

characteristics in the different periods of British literature.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />

ENG 227-Shakespeare 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

A reading of representative plays so selected as to be representative of the major<br />

phases in Shakespeare’s career and to the genres in which he worked. Emphasis<br />

will be placed on a sensitive and thorough reading of the texts of the plays themselves<br />

rather than peripheral materials. (Offered Spring only)<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />

ENG 229-The Short Story 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Traces the development of the short story in 19th and 20th century European<br />

and American literature. Acquaints students with bibliographical and critical<br />

sources related to the short story. Representative selections read; short critical<br />

papers written.<br />

ENG 233-Poetry 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

This writing intensive course is a study of poetry representing a variety of<br />

forms and periods by way of in-depth analysis and interpretation. For better understanding<br />

and study, students apply literary terminology to explicate poetry. In<br />

addition, students will support their analysis and assert their conclusions through<br />

careful and well-documented research using Modern Language Association (MLA)<br />

citation methods.<br />
