COUNSELING AND ADVISING CENTER
The Counseling and Advising Center provides a comprehensive program of services
for Luzerne County Community College students. These services consist of:
1. Evaluation and Placement of Students
Students entering the college must take the Community College Assessment
test. Upon receipt of an acceptance letter from the Admissions Office, a student
may call 740-0406 for a test day appointment.
Members of the Counseling Department and Evening Advisors are primarily
responsible for evaluating these test scores and utilizing any other available
grades/scores in making a final determination on student placement.
Students whose test scores indicate below average performance will be assigned
to Developmental Studies Program courses which are designed to
remove deficiencies and increase the student’s chances of academic success.
2. Academic Advising
Students entering the college are assigned to either a counselor, faculty member,
or an administrator as their advisor. Most day students are assigned a
professional counselor or faculty member as their advisor. Evening students
are assigned an off-campus advisor according to location and site. These advisors
are made known to students at registration periods. Advising periods
are scheduled at both pre-registration and registration. Advisors work closely
with students in planning their course of study.
Advising — students have two options concerning academic advising. They
may choose to:
1. Meet with counselor or advisor each semester to plan their course selection
for the following semester or
2. Self-Advising by picking up their Student Schedule Work Sheet, Student
Advising Form, and master schedule at the counseling/advising
center, Campus Center, first floor (lower level). Evening students do
not have to follow this process. They may simply register for their choice
of courses during the day or evening registration period.
By choosing option number two, students will accept responsibility
for their own course selection on the basis of published program requirements.
The following students are not eligible for option number two titled Self-
Advising:
Newly admitted freshmen, re-admits, transfer, probation students, special program
students — including ACT 101, Student Support Services (SSS) and Services
to Special Populations Programs (SSPP).
NOTE: Both Option 1 and 2 students cannot register until they receive their Basic Information
card from the Registrar’s Office. Students will be notified by Admissions as to their
registration time based upon the total number of credits earned and in progress.
3. Personal Counseling
There is a professional staff of counselors available to assist students in
dealing with specific personal problems. When students manifest personal
problems which the counselor feels exceed the resources of the department
the student may be referred to outside agencies. Students may call the Counseling
and Advising Center at 740-0451 for an appointment.
