OMT 147-Legal Terminology and Transcription 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Ten legal cases will be transcribed during this course. Students will work each<br />

case from its onset through its conclusion, formatting a variety of documents and<br />

correspondence. Each case includes background information about the legal action<br />

and terminology particular to that action.<br />

OMT 154-Office Procedures I 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

This course prepares students for their role in the modern office. Students are<br />

made aware of daily office procedures such as planning meetings and conferences,<br />

techniques on the telephone, and maintaining mail and records. Students will develop<br />

written and oral communications skills for interacting with coworkers and<br />

clients. Finally students will review how the office has changed because of technological<br />

advances.<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 125 and Corequisite: CIS 110.<br />

OMT 230-Medical Terminology II 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

A continuation of Medical Terminology I. The course stresses medical abbreviations,<br />

stem words and their combinations, technical terms and their proper usage.<br />

The following of directions given in medical phraseologies; medical histories, surgical<br />

terminology, X-ray terminology, pathology, autopsy, medical syndromes,<br />

American drug index, basic terms of the medical specialties, and diseases of the<br />

human system. Vocabulary is increased by using medical reports, outlines, histories,<br />

and other medical forms.<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 130.<br />

OMT 233-Medical Office Procedures II 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Continuation of BUS 233. This computerized simulation using medical software<br />

emphasizes patient billing. It introduces and simulates situations using a<br />

widely used patient accounting software. While progressing through menus, the<br />

students learn to input patient information and perform a variety of billing operations.<br />

Students who complete this training should be able to switch to almost<br />

any such software available, even custom software, with a minimum of training.<br />

This course will be supplemented with a lecture and additional activities.<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 133.<br />

OMT 234-Medical Transcription I 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Transcriptions from transcribing machines covering histories, physicals, operative<br />

procedures, autopsies, lab reports and letters from specialists. X-ray reports,<br />

manuscripts for doctors’ publications and other materials are included.<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 130.<br />

OMT 235-Medical Transcription II 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

Continuation of Medical Transcription I with emphasis on speed and accuracy<br />

building. More complex medical reports are included in this course.<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 234.<br />

OMT 238-CPT-4 Coding Insurance Billing<br />

To introduce the student to the support function of accounting and patient<br />

billing aspects of a medical practice. Students will gain practical experience using<br />

patient billing software with a thorough knowledge of CPT-4 (Physicians’<br />

Current Procedural Terminology).<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 130.<br />

OMT 239-ICD-9CM Coding 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />

To introduce the student to the International Classification of Diseases - 9th Edition<br />

widely used in the classifying of diseases and operations for statistical and<br />

insurance purposes.<br />

Prerequisite: OMT 130.<br />
