ENG 101-English Composition 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
Principles of rhetoric, grammar and usage; the development of vocabulary<br />
and extensive use of selected reading materials are stressed as fundamentals in<br />
the writing of themes as well as extended papers. Students will be required to<br />
take a writing competency exam as part of the course.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement by exam or ENG 030 with a “C” or higher grade.<br />
ENG 101-English Composition-”Microcomp”<br />
(via microcomputer) 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
Objectives and requirements are identical to those for the traditional ENG<br />
101 course. Instead of the standard lecture/demonstration approach, the course<br />
delivery is via computer lessons and student papers are prepared using a wordprocessing<br />
program.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement by exam or ENG 030 with a “C” or higher grade.<br />
ENG 102-Advanced Composition 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
Students will develop writing, research and critical thinking skills through diverse<br />
reading assignments, writing assignments, and class discussion in this writing<br />
intensive course. The methods of cause/effect, analogy, and argument will be<br />
discussed and employed culminating in an extended paper employing multiple<br />
patterns and utilizing secondary sources. Students will support their analyses and<br />
assert their conclusions through careful and well-documented research using Modern<br />
Language Association (MLA) citation methods.<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101.<br />
ENG 104-Writing About Literature 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
This writing intensive course is designed to develop awareness of literature as<br />
being central to all arts, to increase levels of literacy and critical faculties, and to broaden<br />
understanding of the human condition. Students will develop writing, research and<br />
critical thinking skills through diverse reading assignments, writing assignments, and<br />
class discussion. By reading poetry, short/long fiction or drama, students learn how<br />
to analyze what they have read. To assist them towards this end, students will apply<br />
literary terms as they respond to the literature. In addition, students will support<br />
their analysis and assert their conclusions through careful and well-documented research<br />
using Modern Language Associations (MLA) citation methods.<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101.<br />
ENG 120-Critical Analysis and Writing of Literature 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
Through intertextuality students will read and respond to a text in writing, focusing<br />
on critical and divergent thinking over increasingly difficult materials. Ongoing<br />
conversations with texts are stressed to aid students in forming connections<br />
within and across works and recognizing archetypal story lines generating insightful<br />
student writing. Texts will be defined broadly to include works of fiction and<br />
nonfiction prose and/or poetry. Analysis, synthesis, and evaluation questioning<br />
skills will aid students in developing larger ideas of cultural conversations through<br />
a variety of reading assignments.<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101.<br />
Corequisite: ENG 104.<br />
ENG 221-Literature of the Western World I 3 Sem.-Hrs.<br />
The reading, study, and discussion of masterpieces of literature from ancient<br />
Classics, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. Particular attention is paid, but not<br />
restricted, to major historical periods, important literary artists, the development<br />
of various genres, and philosophical movements.<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 104.<br />
