REVIEW<br />

1. A student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid in<br />

order to be considered for any federal or state financial aid.<br />

2. A student must also complete the <strong>Luzerne</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> College<br />

Financial Aid Application before any aid can be processed.<br />

3. It will take approximately 4 to 6 weeks to process the FAFSA form, please file<br />

early.<br />

4. A Federal Stafford loan cannot be processed until the FAFSA has been filed<br />

and processed by the Department of Education.<br />

5. If you have attended another college or university, please read the<br />

“Transfer Student” section of this catalog.<br />

6. Any student who has received a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent is not<br />

eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant<br />

or the PHEAA State Grant.<br />

7. All of the programs described in this catalog are renewable on a yearly basis.<br />

ABILITY TO BENEFIT<br />

Students who do not possess a high school diploma or a GED may still be eligible<br />

for Federal Aid if they are admitted to the institution with what is known as<br />

“The Ability to Benefit.” This occurs when a student is formally tested, using a test<br />

approved by the Department of Education. If the student scores in accordance with<br />

at least the minimum standards set forth for that test, then he/she can be admitted<br />

and be eligible for Federal Aid. It will be expected that the student’s admissions file<br />

will serve as backup for test scores.<br />

TUITION ASSISTANCE AND<br />

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES<br />

A number of tuition assistance, grants and scholarship opportunities are available<br />

to LCCC students through the <strong>Luzerne</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> College Foundation.<br />

Awards are available to both full- and part-time students, incoming and<br />

returning students and may be based on financial need, academic achievement<br />

or field of study. To be considered eligible for awards that are based on financial<br />

need, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) form<br />

or FAFSA renewal. These forms are available in the High School Guidance office<br />

or by contacting LCCC’s Financial Aid Office.<br />

For a complete listing of the awards with criteria, deadlines, instructions and an<br />

application form, contact the Foundation Office at 740-0731. The <strong>Luzerne</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

<strong>Community</strong> College Foundation is located in the Campus Center (Room 216).<br />

Office hours are normally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.<br />

I. ACADEMIC<br />

ADULT LEARNER EXCELLENCE AWARD***<br />

Sponsored by Allan Allan<br />

Students must submit a detailed essay of achievements and college/community<br />

involvement. This award is held in conjunction with the <strong>Luzerne</strong> <strong>County</strong> Council<br />

on Adult Higher Education. Applicant must obtain two letters of reference<br />

from an LCCC faculty or staff member, be at least 21 years of age and have completed<br />

a minimum of 15 credits, but not more than 45 credits at the time of the<br />

award. Letters and essays must specifically point out achievements, awards received,<br />

grade point average, volunteer activities and future goals. A scholarship<br />

stipend sponsored by Mr. Allan Allan accompanies the award.<br />
