of the 1980s, FEDEMU adopted
armed struggle as the means
of pursuing their objectives.
They were based in Nsita
Hills in Nabbale subcounty
in Mukono
District, operating
in for example
Kimenyedde
Sub-County in
Mukono and
in Kayunga
District.
Participants
from Mukono
district noted
that, similar
to other
rebel groups,
F E D E M U
committed
numerous
atrocities that
left many families
in grief. These
included killings,
mutilations, torture,
abductions of civilians
and looting. They also
looted cattle, food and shops.
FEDEMU was weakened
and then destroyed by the NRA
after the mysterious killing of Captain
Nkwanga. Some believe that he was killed by Tito Okello Lutwa’s forces, 475
while others says that he was killed in 1986 during Museveni’s regime. 476 After his death,
many of his followers defected and were integrated into the NRA in 1986 while others
operated as armed bandits and later disappeared to Jinja and other places unknown. 477
