divide the community by preaching that salvation can only be achieved upon being<br />

‘born again’. 78 Religious differences continue to spark conflicts across Uganda, and are<br />

manifested in the way different religious denominations and communities relate to one<br />

another, and in many cases condemn traditional African beliefs.<br />

3. Juxtaposition of Political Parties with Religious Affiliations (1960 -<br />

present)<br />

Participants identified the introduction of religiously affiliated political parties, particularly<br />

the Democratic Party (DP) and the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), as responsible for<br />

creating conflicts and societal divides that continue to define Ugandan politics. The DP,<br />

for example, is largely supported by Catholics, while the UPC is supported primarily by<br />

Protestants. Participants referred to the following songs to highlight the political divide<br />

between the parties: “Muni oyube me nyono wii wa,” (“It was a design by the<br />

Europeans to sit on us”), and “Kwon pa DP pe acamo,”<br />

(“I cannot share food<br />

with the DP”).The last phrase illustrates how party politics has gone so far as to divide<br />
