responsibilities, such as<br />

a duty to protect and<br />

provide for the family, as<br />

well as certain privileges,<br />

such as the right to<br />

be served food and to<br />

make decisions for the<br />

family. The traditional<br />

role of women was<br />

described as taking<br />

care of the children and<br />

husband. In Luwero it<br />

was commented that<br />

kitchens and gardens<br />

are considered to be<br />

women’s ‘offices’, and<br />

that women are told<br />

not to interfere with<br />

men’s decision making<br />

in the household and<br />

wider community.<br />

While a large number<br />

of women across the<br />

country criticized this<br />

traditional position of<br />

men in the household<br />

and community,<br />
