responsibilities, such as
a duty to protect and
provide for the family, as
well as certain privileges,
such as the right to
be served food and to
make decisions for the
family. The traditional
role of women was
described as taking
care of the children and
husband. In Luwero it
was commented that
kitchens and gardens
are considered to be
women’s ‘offices’, and
that women are told
not to interfere with
men’s decision making
in the household and
wider community.
While a large number
of women across the
country criticized this
traditional position of
men in the household
and community,
