Prognosis of Marfan syndrome:<br />

- The life expectancy of patients used to be around 40-50 years.<br />

- With the advent of regular echocardiography monitoring and beta-blocker/ACEinhibitor<br />

therapy this has improved significantly over recent years.<br />

- Aortic dissection and other cardiovascular problems remain the leading cause of<br />

death however.<br />

- If you have one patient who has a family history of Marfan's syndrome has recently<br />

been diagnosed with the condition, the most important investigation to monitor<br />

Infective endocarditis<br />

- Microbial infection of the endocardium (valves,endocardial lining or congenital<br />

anomalies).<br />

The following types of patients are affected:<br />

- previously normal valves (50%, typically acute presentation)<br />

- Rheumatic valve disease (30%)(mainly AR)<br />

- Prosthetic valves<br />

- Congenital heart defects<br />

- Intravenous drug users (IVDUs, e.g. Typically causing tricuspid lesion).<br />
