Investigations<br />

1. Decreased red cell trans-ketolase.<br />

2. MRI<br />

Treatment :<br />

urgent replacement of thiamine.<br />

Inability to acquire new memories and confabulation suggests the development of<br />

Korsakoff's syndrome.<br />

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus:<br />

- Is a reversible cause of dementia seen in elderly patients.<br />

- It is thought to be secondary to CSF absorption at the arachnoid villi.<br />

- These changes may be secondary to head injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage or<br />

meningitis<br />

A classical triad of features is seen:<br />

1. Urinary incontinence<br />

2. Dementia and bradyphrenia (slowness of thought)<br />

3. Gait abnormality (may be similar to parkinson's disease)<br />

Imaging:<br />

Hydrocephalus with an enlarged fourth ventricle<br />

Management<br />

Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting.<br />
