Tropical sprue<br />

• Def :<br />

- It`s a malabsorption disease commonly found in tropical regions (India,Asia,central<br />

America but rarely in Africa!!!!) characterized by flattening of intestinal villi &<br />

inflammation of mucosal lining of small bowel.<br />

- It differs significantly from celiac disease.<br />

• Aetilogy :<br />

- following acute diarrhea 2ndry to bacterial (enterococci,enterotoxic<br />

E.coli),viral,Amoeba or parasitic infestation.<br />

• Clinical picture :<br />

Acute diarrhea followed by :<br />

1. Chronic diarrhea/steatorrhoea.<br />

2. Abdominal distension,indigestion,cramps.<br />

3. Weight loss.<br />

4. Mal-absorption syndrome.<br />

Celiac disease (= non-tropical sprue)<br />

- Abnormal flattening of SI villi<br />

due to autoimmune disease.<br />

Tropical sprue<br />

- Abnormal flattening of SI villi<br />

following acute infectious<br />

diarrhoea<br />
