• Management<br />

In primary care; a blood screen is usually sent to exclude reversible causes (e.g.<br />

Hypothyroidism).<br />

- NICE recommend the following tests:<br />

1. FBC<br />

2. U&E<br />

3. LFTs<br />

4. Calcium<br />

5. Glucose<br />

6. TFTs<br />

7. Vitamin B12 and folate levels.<br />

- Patients are now commonly referred on to old-age psychiatrists (sometimes<br />

working in 'memory clinics').<br />

سؤال هام In secondary care ; neuro-imaging (MRI) is performed<br />

- To exclude other reversible conditions (e.g. Subdural haematoma, normal<br />

pressure hydrocephalus) and help provide information on aetiology to guide<br />

prognosis and management.<br />

Alzheimer`s disease<br />

• Def : - Alzheimer's disease is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain<br />

Accounting for the majority of dementia seen in the UK (60%).<br />

- It may be defined as a clinic-pathological entity where there are histological<br />

changes in the form of of neuro-fibrillary tangles and senile plaques in a patient<br />

with dementia.<br />

Neurofibrillary tangles : are aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau protein .<br />

Senile plaques : are extracellular deposits of beta amyloid in the gray matter<br />

of the brain<br />
