- Layers of the eyeball :<br />

Sclera :<br />

o Firm , fibrous, protective layer seen in the front of the eye as white of the eye.<br />

o Connected anteriorly to a transparent cornea which allow passage of light.<br />

o Covered with transparent layer called conjunctiva.<br />

Uvea :<br />

o Intermediate layer containing blood vessels,nerves & pigmented cells.<br />

o Divided into 3 main regions :<br />

‣ Choroid : extends from optic nerve entry to the front of the eye where it<br />

forms ciliary body and iris<br />

‣ Ciliary body : to which the lens is attached via fibrous ligament.<br />

‣ Iris : gives the eye its color, constricts & dilates according to the light.<br />

Retina :<br />

o The innermost layer of the eye whichlines about 3/4 of the eyeball.<br />

o Full of photosensitive cells (rods & cons) which transmit the image to optic<br />

nerve which arises from optic disc.<br />

o Macula lutea is a yellow area of the retina situated in posterior part with a<br />

central depression called fovea centralis. It is the most sensitive part of retina.<br />

Fundus of the eye :<br />

- It is the interior surface of the eye, opposite the lens, and includes the retina, optic disc,<br />

macula and fovea, and posterior pole.<br />
