Basilar artery
• Origin : - Formed at the lower border of the pons by union of the 2 vertebral arteries
on both sides.
• Course : - Runs in the median groove on the anterior surface of the pons &
terminates at the upper border of the pons by dividing into 2 terminal
branches (posterior cerebral artery on both sides).
• Branches (from below upwards) :
1. Anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA): to anterior part of the inferior Surface
of cerebellum & to the lateral part of the pons
2. Internal auditory artery : to inner ear.
3. Pontine branches : to pons.
4. Superior cerebellar artery : to superior surface of cerebellum.
5. Posterior cerebral arteries (terminal branches) : share in circle of Willis.
