Basilar artery<br />

• Origin : - Formed at the lower border of the pons by union of the 2 vertebral arteries<br />

on both sides.<br />

• Course : - Runs in the median groove on the anterior surface of the pons &<br />

terminates at the upper border of the pons by dividing into 2 terminal<br />

branches (posterior cerebral artery on both sides).<br />

• Branches (from below upwards) :<br />

1. Anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA): to anterior part of the inferior Surface<br />

of cerebellum & to the lateral part of the pons<br />

2. Internal auditory artery : to inner ear.<br />

3. Pontine branches : to pons.<br />

4. Superior cerebellar artery : to superior surface of cerebellum.<br />

5. Posterior cerebral arteries (terminal branches) : share in circle of Willis.<br />
