The antigens against which the autoimmunity develops may be :
a) Native to the glomerulus itself: (e.g. the GBM in anti-GBM disease) or
b) Circulating antigens/antigen-antibody complexes that become trapped
in glomerular structures.
The nature of the injury will depend on the site of the IC (e.g. IgA-containing
mesangial complexes activate mesangial cells to cause IgA nephropathy).
The number of ICs formed and the host response to them will determine the
extent of the injury.
