Fatty liver (steatosis)<br />

- It`s liver enlargement due to accumulation of fat (TG & other lipids)in the liver cells.<br />

- It`s divided into :<br />

1) Alcohol-related steatosis (discussed before).<br />

2) Non-alcohol related steatosis (non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases): due to<br />

o Obesity.<br />

خد بالك I) o DM type II (Insulin resistance) (not type<br />

o DLP<br />

o Others : cushing, ,pregnancy, steroids,tetracycline,amiodarone.<br />

- If associated with inflammatory cell infiltration ,then it`s called steatohepatitis which<br />

is either :<br />

1) Alcoholic steatohepatitis (discussed before) or<br />

2) Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).<br />

- It can progress to fibrosis & cirrhosis.<br />

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)<br />

- It`s is now the most common cause of liver disease in the developed world.<br />

- It is largely caused by obesity and describes a spectrum of disease ranging from:<br />

Steatosis : fat in the liver<br />

Steatohepatitis : fat with inflammation, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)<br />

Fibrosis and liver cirrhosis.<br />

- NAFLD is thought to represent the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome<br />

and hence insulin resistance is thought to be the key mechanism leading to steatosis.<br />
