B. Trematodes (flat worms)<br />

Schistosomiasis<br />

- Schistosomiasis, or bilharzia, is a parasitic flatworm infection.<br />

- The following types of schistosomiasis are recognised:<br />

• Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma intercalatum: intestinal schistosomiasis<br />

• Schistosoma haematobium: urinary schistosomiasis<br />

Schistosoma haematobium :<br />

- This typically presents as a ‘swimmer’s itch’ in patients who have recently<br />

returned from Africa.<br />

Cystodes (tape worms) :<br />

- Tape worms are made up of repeated segments called proglottids.<br />

- These are often present in faeces and are useful diagnostically.<br />

Cysticercosis<br />

• Caused by :<br />

1) Taenia solium (from pork).<br />

2) Taenia saginata (from beef).<br />

• Management: Niclosamide<br />

Hydatid disease<br />

Caused by the dog tapeworm<br />

Echinococcus granulosus.<br />

Life-cycle involves dogs ingesting<br />

hydatid cysts from sheep liver.<br />

Often seen in farmers.<br />

May cause liver cysts.<br />

Management :<br />

Albendazole.<br />
