Skin infections<br />

Impetigo<br />

- Is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection most common among pre-school children<br />

- The causative bacterias are group A streptococcus and staphylococcus aureus.<br />

• Features :<br />

Fever.<br />

Rash; red sores quickly ruptures oozes yellowish-brown crust<br />

resemble with brown sugar or honey.<br />

Diarrhea.<br />

Itching.<br />

Weakness.<br />

Treatment :<br />

1) Limited, localised disease<br />

Topical fusidic acid is first-line<br />

Topical retapamulin is used 2nd-line if fusidin is ineffective or not tolerated.<br />

Oral flucloxacillin /Topical mupirocin (Bactroban):<br />

o Impetigo unresponsive to above measures as MRSA could be the possible<br />

cause.<br />

2) Extensive disease<br />

Oral flucloxacillin.<br />

Oral erythromycin if penicillin allergic<br />

Impetigo - topical fusidic acid<br />

oral flucloxacillin / topical mupirocin<br />

Tinea<br />

- Is a term given to dermatophyte fungal infections.<br />

- Three main types of infection are described depending on what part of the body is<br />

infected :<br />

Tinea capitis – scalp<br />

Tinea corporis - trunk, legs or arms.<br />

Tinea pedis - feet<br />
