Erythema nodosum<br />

- Idiopathic condition but may be immune complex deposition following certain causes<br />

• Causes<br />

1) Infection : streptococci, TB, brucellosis.<br />

2) Systemic disease : sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, Behcet's.<br />

3) Malignancy/lymphoma<br />

4) Drugs : penicillins, sulphonamides, combined oral contraceptive pill<br />

5) Pregnancy<br />

• Overview<br />

Inflammation of subcutaneous fat.<br />

Typically causes tender, erythematous, nodular lesions.<br />

Usually occurs over shins (especially lower limbs) , may also occur elsewhere (e.g.<br />

Forearms, thighs).<br />

Usually resolve (heal) within 1-2 months without scarring.<br />

• Management :<br />

Leg elevation.<br />

Removal of the precipitating cause.<br />

NSAIDS<br />

Oral steroids rarely used & are best avoided.<br />

• Prognosis :<br />
