HYDRAULICS EXAMPLE<br />

The following is a manually worked example demonstrates the steps involved in performing<br />

hydraulics calculations.<br />

<strong>Drilling</strong> a deviated hole, with the following information:<br />

• 4½" drillpipe, 16.60 lb m /ft; I.D. = 3.326"<br />

• 300 ft. of 7¼" drill collars; I.D. = 2.8125"<br />

• Last casing 13 3 / 8 " 61 lb m /ft; I.D. = 12.515"<br />

• Hole size 9 7 / 8 "<br />

• 9 7 / 8 " HTC J33 bit; Jets = three #12<br />

• Fluid density = 15.3 lb m /gal.<br />

• PV = 32 cps<br />

• YP = 19 lb f /100 ft 2<br />

• Initial gel = 5, (use as 3 rpm reading)<br />

• 10 - min gel = 12<br />

• 30 - min gel = 15<br />

• Flow rate = 375 gal/min.<br />

• Maximum available standpipe pressure = 3500 psi<br />

• Fracture gradient at shoe = 16.5 lb m /gal<br />

• Fracture gradient at TD = 17.0 lb m /gal<br />

• Pore pressure at shoe = 14.0 lb m /gal<br />

• Pore pressure at TD = 14.7 lb m /gal<br />
