render victims unconscious. Clearly marked exits with battery-powered signs in

case of electrical outage are required (Table 5-4).

First Aid

First aid supplies should be readily available and adequate numbers of persons

available to render first aid. Minor injuries occur with frequency in the laboratory

and often do not require emergency treatment. In some facilities, workers

are required to complete first aid training and first responder training to be able

to react quickly and appropriately if an accidental exposure or injury occurs.

Immediate and effective treatment to stabilize the victim of illness or accident

often prevents permanent medical problems. In some facilities, the treatment is

provided by a team that is ready to respond to emergencies on a moment’s notice.

Technology has provided equipment for treatment of possible heart attack, and

many lives are being saved with a portable defibrillator that is programmed to

restore a normal rhythm to the victims of serious heart conditions.

Instructor Responsibilities

The instructor in an educational facility, along with appropriate committees,

is responsible for shop, classroom, or laboratory safety instruction in accident

Table 5-4 Exits and Fire Safety Checklist for Unobstructed Movement

1. Exits are clearly visible and access is indicated,

with no obstructions on either side of the exits.

2. Exit doors are free of chains or any other

device that would prevent the ability to exit

building during an emergency.

3. Nonexit doors are marked accordingly to avoid

confusion in an emergency situation.

4. Exit lights are in good working order.

5. Evacuation plans are located near the exit door

of the lab.

6. Fire extinguishers are visibly and conveniently

located.

7. Fire extinguishers are routinely tested and

maintained.

8. Training is provided for class A, B, and C fire

extinguishers.

9. Method exists for reporting unsafe conditions.

10. Information is available for obtaining help
