Phlebotomy is an integral part of medical laboratory practice. It is good to

remember that no laboratory procedure will be any better than the quality of the

specimen that is being tested. Most blood and other body fluid collections in the

past were performed by medical laboratory technicians or technologists and in

some cases, by nurses and physicians. Today, most blood is collected by trained

phlebotomists, but medical laboratory technologists and technicians must nevertheless

be somewhat proficient at collecting blood samples. Phlebotomists are

responsible for many tasks other than collecting blood and are valuable adjuncts
