(Figure 7-8). This is where units of blood and their components may be stored

(Figure 7-9) until they are ready for infusion into the patient. Some freezers are

also necessary to provide long-term storage and for supplies that might deteriorate

if thawed (Table 7-2).

Microscopes

Microscopes are delicate instruments that are used in many areas of the laboratory,

but they must be properly maintained and cared for to gain satisfaction and

accuracy from their uses (Figure 7-10). Some are extremely sophisticated, but most

are called light or bright-field microscopes, and these contain adapters that enable

them to be converted easily for dark-field and phase contrast purposes (Figure

7-11). These modifications are required for performing certain tests.
