7. Variations in an individual’s urine color may cause the patient test strip to have

a slightly different color than the color chart on the bottle. In addition, differing

brands of chemical strips may have different reporting values. If the test strip

color does not match a particular color square on the color chart, then match the

test strip to a color square of equal intensity. If the color development is slightly

uneven, then match the average color on the test pad.

8. Record results on the appropriate form and dispose of the dipstick in the proper

waste receptacle

9. If necessary for confirmation, the estimate of the specific gravity provided by

the dipstick may require the use of instruments for confirming the results before

they are reported. When required, perform a specific gravity for the urine sample

using a urinometer (Figure 12-3) or a refractometer (Figure 12-4).

10. Perform confirmatory tests for protein, reducing substances, ketones, and bilirubin

if the dipstick indicates positive results for these (see Procedures #3 through #6).

11. Discard all supplies used for the procedure in appropriate containers. A disinfectant

should be used to clean work surfaces, and equipment should be cleaned

and restored to its former position. Discard gloves appropriately and wash hands

thoroughly in accordance with established policies.
