ESSENTIALS OF CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE

Table 5-7 Required and Essential Safety Equipment Survey

This is a sample form for relating complete safety information to the student.

1. Be familiar with the location of the nearest fi re extinguisher.

2. Know the location of the nearest fi re alarm.

3. Explain use of the ABC fire extinguisher located in the MLT laboratory.

4. Learn the muster point outside the building if an evacuation order is given.

5. Relate location of the designated safe area in case of dangerous weather warning.

6. Indicate the location of the fi rst aid kit.

7. Understand who should render fi rst aid in the medical laboratory area.

8. Relate awareness of how the institution is notified if an accident has occurred in the clinical site.

9. Locate the MSDSs and the emergency plan location.

10. Understand responsibilities for safe operations in the medical laboratory.

11. Describe use of eyewash stations after demonstration.

12. Point out fire blanket and relate use of it.

Sharps Injury Logs

It is not uncommon for sharps sticks and cuts to occur on a regular basis. When

this type of accident occurs, policies and procedures dictate that certain practices

are followed. A log is maintained to document that the incident was reported

properly (Table 5-6) and the victim was treated in accordance with policies of

the health care facility. Proper orientation, regular inservice education and a willingness

to observe safety measures will help to eliminate many injuries.

Most institutions, including educational facilities, require a log of all injuries

by needles and other sharps (Table 5-6). Medical follow-up must be documented

and filed for a prescribed period of time. A designated health care provider

will complete the medical examination to include the information in Table 5-6.

Proper follow-up will be the responsibility of the initial health care provider.

Essential Safety Equipment Survey

Whether a student is in a clinical site or the educational facility, he or she should

be oriented to and become familiar with the location of safety items, evacuation

routes, and safe places for weather emergencies (Table 5-7). Students and workers

should be periodically updated on safety practices for their facility.

Other Areas Requiring Safety Measures

Fires and natural events such as weather are areas that require safety measures

for patients, visitors, and health care workers. These events would require

preparation by the staff of educational and health care institutions and include

drills that ensure everyone knows the proper action to take in the event of such an

event. These are generic instructions similar to those that will be posted in all college

buildings and health care facilities for each department or division. As previously

mentioned, periodic drills for these activities will be conducted on an institutional
