quality assurance program. Quality assurance programs take into consideration

the environment and the physical aspects of the facility and how it is maintained,

from adequate lighting to proper ventilation and cleanliness. Just as soldiers

must keep their “weapons clean and their powder dry,” equipment maintenance

is a major component of a smoothly functioning and dependable laboratory.

Many breakdowns may be prevented when diligent care is taken of equipment,

supplies are properly stored to prevent deterioration, and specimens are correctly

handled and identified. Competence of personnel and ensuring adequate

staffing of various levels of staff is also of the utmost importance.
