laboratory training programs in this country is the National Accrediting Agency

for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). A nonprofit agency called the Commission

on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), also

accredits a number of medical programs while the NAACLS is responsible for

accrediting educational programs for laboratory workers only. Several groups

exist that specifically accredit each of the various medical programs around the

country and are responsible for ensuring that the programs of training adhere to

high standards set by members of the profession. Table 2-1 lists the agencies that

accredit educational programs for clinical laboratory personnel.

There are many examples of other agencies that accredit or license departments

other than the medical laboratory within the hospital and in educational

institutions. The Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) provides accreditation

for programs of surgical technology, and the American Association for

Respiratory Care (AARC) exists for the education of respiratory therapists. Some

educational facilities are accredited by regional branches of the Commission on

Colleges (COC), a facility-wide form of accreditation that covers the entire scope

of operations for southern colleges and universities.
