Procedure

1. Wash hands and don gloves.

2. Assemble necessary equipment and

supplies.

3. Place a square of the absorbent test mat

onto a sheet of white paper.

4. Place 10 drops of urine on the center of the test mat.

5. Place 1 Ictotest tablet on the moistened mat.

6. Carefully place 1 drop of deionized or distilled water on the top of the tablet (Figure

12-36). Wait 5 seconds. Add a second drop of water to the tablet so that the water

runs off the tablet and onto the mat.

7. The presence of a blue or purple color on the mat indicates a positive test for bilirubin.

A slight pink or red color should be ignored.

8. The test is subjectively graded as either negative or positive. See manufacturer’s

product insert with images of positive results.

9. Discard all supplies used for the procedure in the appropriate containers. A

disinfectant should be used to clean the work surfaces and equipment should

be cleaned and restored to its former position. Gloves should be discarded

appropriately and the hands washed thoroughly in accordance with established

policies.

Reporting of Results

Report on the Procedure Report Form or other appropriate form the amounts of bilirubin

present as either positive or negative only. There is no semiquantitative determination

for this procedure.

Clinitest—Semiquantitative Test for Glucose and Other Reducing Substances

Principles

The presence of a number of reducing substances may be determined by the Clinitest

method even when a negative result has been found with the use of dipsticks, as

most dipstick brands are specific for glucose by using the glucohexokinase method.

The Clinitest will provide a positive result for any of the reducing substances,
