Reporting of Results

1. Using the laboratory report form provided (Procedure Report Form*) or other

appropriate form, record the biochemical test results. Use the following terms in

your report. Note that “normal” values are shown in Table 12-3.

Urine color

colorless, straw, yellow, amber, red, brown, blue, or green

Urine appearance clear, hazy, cloudy, or turbid

Glucose

negative, 100, 250, 500, 1000, or ~2000 mg/dL

Bilirubin

negative, + (Small), ++ (Moderate), +++ (Large)

Ketone

negative, trace, small, moderate, or large

Specific gravity 1.000, 1.005, 1.010, 1.015, 1.020, 1.025, or 1.030

Blood

present as intact RBCs or non-hemolyzed (negative, trace, moderate), and

as hemolyzed (negative, trace, small, moderate, large)

pH 5.0, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, or 8.5

Protein

negative, trace, +/30 (1+), ++/100 (2+), +++/500 (3+), >2000 (4+) in mg/dL

Urobilinogen normal, 2, 4, or 6 Ehrlich units

Nitrites

negative or positive

Leukocytes

negative, trace, small, moderate, or large

(white blood cells)

2. Perform confirmatory tests (see Procedures #3 through #6) if indicated and report

the results in the appropriate portion of the report form or on a separate form.

*Note: Some sections of the Procedure Report Form will not be completed until after you have undertaken

additional procedures in this chapter. Confirmatory test results for acetone (Acetest) will be obtained in Procedure

#3, for bilirubin (Icotest) in Procedure #4, for glucose (Clinitest) in Procedure #5, and for protein in Procedure #6.

Procedure #2 addresses microscopic examination.
