Enlisted non-rate marks for pay grades E-1 through E-3 will consist of short diagonal<br />

stripe(s) sewn on a blue background. White stripes indicate seaman, red stripes indicate<br />

fireman, and green stripes indicate airman.<br />

The non-rate marks will be sewn on the outer side of the left sleeve of the blue service<br />

dress coat. The device is placed midway between the shoulder and the elbow, and<br />

midway between the front and back crease.<br />

Rating designator designate enlisted personnel, pay grades E-2 and E-3, for the rating of<br />

which they are qualified, and marks are on a blue background and consist of the same<br />

type of specialty insignia used in pay grades E-4 through E-9.<br />

(E-1) 1 White stripe:<br />

Seaman/Fireman/Airman<br />

Apprentice (E-2) 2 stripes:<br />

White -Seaman Apprentice<br />

Red -Fireman Apprentice<br />

Green - Airman Apprentice<br />

(E-3) 3 stripes:<br />

White - Seaman<br />

Red - Fireman<br />

Green - Airman<br />

The rating designator is placed on the left coat sleeve, centered directly above and on the<br />

seam of the non-rate mark or may be an all-in-one patch that has the two combined.<br />

Both are located in the same position. The combined patch can be carefully cut and<br />

sewn to fit E-1 to E-3.<br />
