Enlisted non-rate marks for pay grades E-1 through E-3 will consist of short diagonal
stripe(s) sewn on a blue background. White stripes indicate seaman, red stripes indicate
fireman, and green stripes indicate airman.
The non-rate marks will be sewn on the outer side of the left sleeve of the blue service
dress coat. The device is placed midway between the shoulder and the elbow, and
midway between the front and back crease.
Rating designator designate enlisted personnel, pay grades E-2 and E-3, for the rating of
which they are qualified, and marks are on a blue background and consist of the same
type of specialty insignia used in pay grades E-4 through E-9.

(E-1) 1 White stripe:
Seaman/Fireman/Airman
Apprentice (E-2) 2 stripes:
White -Seaman Apprentice
Red -Fireman Apprentice
Green - Airman Apprentice
Seaman/Fireman/Airman
(E-3) 3 stripes:
White - Seaman
Red - Fireman
Green - Airman
The rating designator is placed on the left coat sleeve, centered directly above and on the
seam of the non-rate mark or may be an all-in-one patch that has the two combined.
Both are located in the same position. The combined patch can be carefully cut and
sewn to fit E-1 to E-3.
