1.B.5. Uniform Wear by Retired or Separated Personnel<br />

The table below describes the occasions when members who are not on active duty<br />

may wear the uniform per 14 U.S.C. § 483. Such individuals will at no time portray<br />

themselves as being on active duty with the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>. The uniform may be<br />

worn traveling to and from the event described in the table below.<br />

If the member is: Wear the uniform: Comments:<br />

Retired Any member on the retired list will be<br />

entitled to wear the uniform of his/her<br />

rank or rating:<br />

• On occasions of a military<br />

ceremony (including retirements,<br />

changes of command, or funerals).<br />

• At patriotic parades on national<br />

holidays, or occasions in which<br />

active or reserve units are taking<br />

part.<br />

• At social or other functions when<br />

the invitation has been influenced<br />

by the member’s active military<br />

service, including weddings.<br />

Separated (war service) Any member who has served honorably in<br />

the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> during time of war<br />

(declared or undeclared) may wear the<br />

uniform of his/her rank or rating when not<br />

in active service, whether or not on the<br />

retired list during:<br />

(1) Occasions of ceremony (see 14<br />

U.S.C. § 483) and<br />

(2) "When authorized by regulations<br />

prescribed by the President." (see 10<br />

U.S.C. § 772(e)).<br />
