1.B.5. Uniform Wear by Retired or Separated Personnel
The table below describes the occasions when members who are not on active duty
may wear the uniform per 14 U.S.C. § 483. Such individuals will at no time portray
themselves as being on active duty with the Coast Guard. The uniform may be
worn traveling to and from the event described in the table below.
If the member is: Wear the uniform: Comments:
Retired Any member on the retired list will be
entitled to wear the uniform of his/her
rank or rating:
• On occasions of a military
ceremony (including retirements,
changes of command, or funerals).
• At patriotic parades on national
holidays, or occasions in which
active or reserve units are taking
part.
• At social or other functions when
the invitation has been influenced
by the member’s active military
service, including weddings.
Separated (war service) Any member who has served honorably in
the Coast Guard during time of war
(declared or undeclared) may wear the
uniform of his/her rank or rating when not
in active service, whether or not on the
retired list during:
(1) Occasions of ceremony (see 14
U.S.C. § 483) and
(2) "When authorized by regulations
prescribed by the President." (see 10
U.S.C. § 772(e)).
