2.A.1.a. Tattoos and Body Alterations<br />

For the authorized military appearance:<br />

Reference (c) contains guidance on what is authorized, what is considered excessive,<br />

what is unacceptable content, grandfathering existing markings, and personnel forms to<br />

document the location of tattoos, body markings, body piercing, and body mutilations.<br />

2.A.2. Civilian Clothing Appearance and Standard<br />

The following table describes the appearance and standards to be adhered to while<br />

military members are wearing civilian clothing.<br />

Civilian Clothing Wear:<br />

While on Liberty<br />

Only the following uniform items which do not<br />

present a distinctive <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> appearance may be<br />

worn with civilian attire:<br />

Wearing or displaying clothing, • Trench coat (w/o insignia)<br />

jewelry, tattoos, etc. depicting drugs • Windbreaker (w/o insignia)<br />

or advocating drug use, or of a<br />

sexual, crude, or racist nature is<br />

strictly prohibited.<br />

Sweaters (cardigan or wooly-pully w/o<br />

shoulder boards)<br />

• Ball caps (w/o insignia)<br />

• Watch cap<br />

• Blue four-in-hand necktie and bow-ties<br />

• Shoes and boots<br />

• Gloves<br />

• White shirts<br />

While on Duty<br />

Law specialists may wear civilian clothing when they<br />

appear in courts that prohibit attorneys from wearing<br />

the uniform when representing the United States.<br />
