2.A.1.a. Tattoos and Body Alterations
For the authorized military appearance:
Reference (c) contains guidance on what is authorized, what is considered excessive,
what is unacceptable content, grandfathering existing markings, and personnel forms to
document the location of tattoos, body markings, body piercing, and body mutilations.
2.A.2. Civilian Clothing Appearance and Standard
The following table describes the appearance and standards to be adhered to while
military members are wearing civilian clothing.
Civilian Clothing Wear:
While on Liberty
Only the following uniform items which do not
present a distinctive Coast Guard appearance may be
worn with civilian attire:
Wearing or displaying clothing, • Trench coat (w/o insignia)
jewelry, tattoos, etc. depicting drugs • Windbreaker (w/o insignia)
or advocating drug use, or of a
sexual, crude, or racist nature is
strictly prohibited.

Foul weather parka (w/o insignia)
Sweaters (cardigan or wooly-pully w/o
shoulder boards)
• Belts
• Ball caps (w/o insignia)
• Watch cap
• Cold weather cap (w/o insignia)
• Blue four-in-hand necktie and bow-ties
• Shoes and boots
• Gloves
• White shirts
While on Duty
Law specialists may wear civilian clothing when they
appear in courts that prohibit attorneys from wearing
the uniform when representing the United States.
