3.C.6. Skirts
3-37
COMDTINST M1020.6G
For women, Service Dress skirts and trousers are equivalent items that may be worn
interchangeably. An individual Coast Guard woman may choose to wear either the skirt
or trousers at her option, except for special occasions where either the trousers are
specifically prescribed.
Women who are participants in official military formations (such as changes of
command, award, or other ceremonies) that may require long periods of standing in place
will wear trousers. Trousers will be worn if a sword is worn.
To facilitate personal safety, women will not normally wear skirts, on military ships,
cutters, boats, or aircraft. However, skirts may be authorized during special occasions,
such as receptions and open houses, when it would not pose a safety concern, violate
rules of decorum, or would not cause embarrassment to the wearer.
