SPREADING<br />

PROSPERITY<br />

RESOLVING THE three problems along the continuum threatening capitalism<br />

is a matter of will. It is not rocket science, not impossibly difficult,<br />

not something that should better be left <strong>to</strong> chance. Making up our<br />

collective minds may be challenging, but accomplishing agreed goals is, for<br />

the most part, readily achievable.<br />

This chapter lays out proposed solutions <strong>to</strong> the serious strains evident<br />

<strong>to</strong>day in global capitalism. Illicit dealings can be sharply curtailed, if we but<br />

choose <strong>to</strong> do so. Poverty <strong>and</strong> inequality can be cut with a properly functioning<br />

free-market system. And capitalism’s dis<strong>to</strong>rted philosophical underpinnings<br />

can in time give way <strong>to</strong> the new focus on justice that is emerging from<br />

behind the walls of academe. Most of the approaches <strong>to</strong> resolving these issues<br />

are grounded upon our will <strong>to</strong> act, a determination that I hope is<br />

strengthened by all that has preceded in this book.<br />

DELEGITIMIZING DIRTY MONEY<br />

Part I on illegality was subtitled, “We Like the <strong>Money</strong>.” The idea has <strong>to</strong> be<br />

replaced with, “Sorry, we don’t want it.” When we agree that it harms far<br />

more than helps us <strong>and</strong> our shared world, then we can substantially reduce it<br />

with a few strokes of the pen.<br />

<strong>How</strong>? Say so. International financial transfers of proceeds that break<br />

laws in their origin or movement or are intended <strong>to</strong> break laws in their use<br />

are unwanted. There is no problem with admitting that we do not have laws<br />
