Washington-area friends in the World Presidents’ Organization have been

me to write.
My greatest debt is owed to my wife, Pauline. Her first book was dedicated
to me, although she edited out my suggested tag line, “without whose
assistance this work would have been finished two years earlier.” Pauline’s intelligence
and character have illuminated my life for more than 40 years.

My children, Deren and Gayle, have given me the greatest gift of all—a
sense of optimism. From the moments they were born, I couldn’t be anything
but upbeat about them and the world they would eventually inherit.
