138. In the mid-1980s, Muammar Qaddafi was caught red-handed sponsoring
terrorism. His personal signature was discovered on checks paying
some $6 million to Palestinian terrorist groups. This allegedly
included the Palestine Liberation Front, which hijacked the Italian
cruise ship Achille Lauro in October 1985. Qaddafi’s signatures on the
cancelled checks contributed directly to the U.S. decision to bomb targets
in Libya in 1986, including his tented compound. Disinformation
then was put out that a leak from within his security detail had revealed
his whereabouts. Unnerved, Qaddafi allegedly executed several
of his bodyguards. Libya then retaliated against the United States by
destroying Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988,
killing 200 in the air and on the ground. Today, Qaddafi reportedly
prefers to travel with a female security detail.
