138. In the mid-1980s, Muammar Qaddafi was caught red-h<strong>and</strong>ed sponsoring<br />

terrorism. His personal signature was discovered on checks paying<br />

some $6 million <strong>to</strong> Palestinian terrorist groups. This allegedly<br />

included the Palestine Liberation Front, which hijacked the Italian<br />

cruise ship Achille Lauro in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1985. Qaddafi’s signatures on the<br />

cancelled checks contributed directly <strong>to</strong> the U.S. decision <strong>to</strong> bomb targets<br />

in Libya in 1986, including his tented compound. Disinformation<br />

then was put out that a leak from within his security detail had revealed<br />

his whereabouts. Unnerved, Qaddafi allegedly executed several<br />

of his bodyguards. Libya then retaliated against the United States by<br />

destroying Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotl<strong>and</strong>, in 1988,<br />

killing 200 in the air <strong>and</strong> on the ground. Today, Qaddafi reportedly<br />

prefers <strong>to</strong> travel with a female security detail.<br />
